Japanese imaging giant Canon has unveiled the EOS R8 Mark II in Bangladesh. The compact, lightweight full-frame mirror less camera features a 24.2-megapixel sensor. As the successor to the EOS R8, it introduces new creative tools, a simpler interface and Coordinated Control image stabilization, along with several technologies borrowed from Canon’s higher-end models.
The camera was officially launched on Monday (21 september) evening at an event at the Radisson Hotel in Dhaka.
Nagai Katsuyuki, Senior Director of Regional Sales and Marketing at Canon Singapore, said the camera’s fresh design, intuitive features and advanced imaging technology will inspire photographers of all levels to explore new creative possibilities and develop their own visual style.
Small, light and comfortable to hold:
Canon says the EOS R8 Mark II, which includes in-body stabilization, is its smallest and lightest full-frame mirrorless camera. It measures roughly 131.4 × 90.0 × 79.7 mm and weighs about 546 g with battery and memory card. Its design keeps Canon’s familiar pentaprism-style profile, blending straight lines with curves, and the grip is comfortable to hold.
It is also the first camera in this class of EOS R full-frame models to include a multi-controller (joystick) like those on higher-end bodies. This lets users move the autofocus point easily while keeping an eye on the viewfinder. Photographers with larger hands can attach an optional extension grip, which is easy to fit and remove and still allows tripod mounting and battery changes.
Better low-light performance:
A full-frame sensor captures light over an area roughly 2.5 times larger than an APS-C sensor. That improves image quality and autofocus in dim conditions. It also delivers a wider field of view at the same focal length, making it easier to shoot dramatic images with ultra-wide lenses or create pleasing background blur.
To reduce camera shake at slow shutter speeds, the camera has 5-axis in-body image stabilization. Combined with the stabilization in RF lenses, Coordinated Control delivers up to 7.5 stops of correction at the center and up to 7.0 stops at the edges.
Built for fast action:
For moving subjects, the camera offers second-generation Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, pre-continuous shooting and continuous shooting of up to 40 fps with the electronic shutter. It can also prioritize and track a pre-registered person, which helps keep a specific individual in focus within a crowd.
More ways to personalize your look:
To achieve preferred colors and moods without editing, Canon has added two new color filters for photos and videos: “Negative Film Tone” and “Positive Film Tone.” They join the existing 14 filters, and users can now adjust filter intensity. The handheld night scene mode adds four color options: blue, black-orange, pink and green.
Time-lapse movies gain exposure smoothing, timer priority and delayed-start options.
For beginners, there is a Creative Auto mode, which Canon says makes its debut on an EOS full-frame camera. It uses a simple interface to help users build their skills step by step. Video shooters get background blur, slow and fast motion movies and Cinema View.
Features for videographers:
The camera records 4K 60p video oversampled from 6K, and Full HD up to 180p with sound. It includes Canon Log 3 for color grading, and Custom Picture settings from the Cinema EOS line let users apply their own look-up tables (LUTs) and fine-tune image parameters. For live streaming, there are four wired and wireless options, and the Live Switcher Mobile app enables multi-angle broadcasts.
For virtual reality (VR) content, the camera works with both full-frame and APS-C VR lenses. A new VR Clear mode improves contrast and clarity when viewing in VR goggles, and new Dual Pixel 3D Converter software can convert still images to 3D.
New accessories:
Canon also announced three accessories alongside the camera:
– Extension Grip EG-E2
– Tripod Grip HG-100TBR with Bluetooth remote controller
– Speedlite EL-5 (Version 2), whose wireless range has been extended to about 50 meters
