PenInfo Desk: Climate activists protested against a business conference on liquefied natural gas (LNG) by pouring paint on the facade of the luxury Adlon Hotel in Berlin on Tuesday (10 Dec) morning.
Several demonstrators were involved in pouring green paint on the hotel, located steps away from the landmark Brandenburg Gate, which is hosting the conference.
The paint ended up all over a glass door and on the pavement. At least four young people sat down in front of the hotel entrance as part of the protest.
The Last Generation climate activist group said in a post on X: “Stop the gas lobby – clean gas is a dirty lie!”
“It is only cleaner than coal when it is burned. If you include transportation by tanker and extraction – often by fracking – LPG is the number one climate killer and therefore more harmful than coal,” the activist group claimed in a further post.
Germany has rapidly shifted to importing LNG from abroad after the Russia, which had previously supplied much of Germany’s energy needs, halted pipeline exports of natural gas in the wake of the February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine and subsequent European Union sanctions on Russia.
Earlier that morning, demonstrators had attempted to block access to the hotel by sitting across the entrance, which had been cordoned off over a wide area.
Police officers pulled, pushed and carried them away. The Last Generation posted a video online, which showed police dragging away protesters, some of whom screamed in apparent pain.
