Billionaire Elon Musk’s brand is only in third place this year – behind German car companies Volkswagen and BMW.

BMW dominated the European electric vehicle market for the first time in July, registering a surge in demand while other competitors struggled.

Around 49,200 all-electric Volkswagen vehicles have been newly registered in Germany so far in 2024, ahead of BMW’s 33,167 vehicles, according to the KBA.

Registrations of new Tesla vehicles, meanwhile, sit at 31,461.

Both VW and Tesla are doing worse in the currently weakening battery-electric cars market than they did a year ago at this time. The core brand of the Volkswagen Group had sold a good 9,400 more vehicles compared to this year, while Tesla sold 23,300 more.

BMW, on the other hand, is currently on a growth path in its home market and is up 6,600 cars year-on-year.
