Adani to Invest Tk 60,000 Crore in 3,200 MW Power Plant in Assam

Dhaka : Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma laid the foundation stone for a 3,200 MW thermal power plant of Adani Power Limited in Chapor, Dhubri district of Assam, India. The ultra-supercritical power plant is expected to involve an investment of around Tk 60,000 crore.

According to the Adani Group, the project will generate employment for up to 20,000 people during the construction phase. Once operational, it is expected to create around 5,000 jobs. Local contractors, suppliers, transport businesses and various service providers will also have opportunities to participate in the project.

The power plant will comprise four 800 MW units. It will feature high-efficiency technology and modern environmental protection systems. Power generation is scheduled to begin in phases from December 2030.

At the foundation-laying ceremony, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that Assam is rapidly emerging as an energy hub in India. He described the nearly Tk 60,000 crore project as one of the largest single investments in the state to date. According to him, the project will create employment, boost economic activity and increase the state’s tax revenues.

Adani Group Director Jeet Adani said the project marks the beginning of a new chapter for Assam. He said the 3,200 MW thermal power plant would involve an investment of Tk 60,000 crore and help provide reliable and affordable electricity to households, businesses and industries.

Adani Power is India’s largest private thermal power producer, currently operating an installed thermal capacity of 18,290 MW across 13 power plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh, along with a 40 MW solar plant in Gujarat.

The Chapor power plant is part of the Adani Group’s planned investment of approximately Tk 78,750 crore in Assam’s power sector. This includes plans to build two pumped-storage power plants with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW at an estimated cost of around Tk 18,750 crore. These projects will be developed by Adani Green Energy.

In addition, Adani Energy Solutions is implementing a smart-meter project to modernize Assam’s electricity distribution system. The group also has investment plans in the aviation and cement sectors in Assam. The Adani Group has stated that its total investment in Assam is expected to exceed Tk 1 lakh crore over the next three to four years.

Earlier, in October 2025, Adani Power won the contract to build the 3,200 MW power plant through a competitive bidding process. The company subsequently received the project’s work order from Assam Power Distribution Company Limited in November 2025.
