Germany hits record share of renewable energy in Q3 electricity

More than 60% of electricity generated in Germany in the third quarter of 2024 came from renewable sources, authorities revealed on Friday

PenInfo Desk: The Federal Statistical Office said the share of renewable energy in the country’s electricity production rose to 63.4%, a record for the third quarter.

The figure surpassed the 60.6% achieved in 2023, with favorable weather conditions playing a part in reaching the new total.

Electricity generation from wind power in the third quarter grew by 2.4% year-on-year, forming 24.7% of the total share.

The strongest growth was seen in photovoltaics, which surged 13.5% to provide 23.8% of the country’s electricity.

“The increase in electricity production from photovoltaics and wind power is due to particularly sunny and windy months in the third quarter of 2024 and a significant increase in the number of photovoltaic systems,” the Wiesbaden-based agency said.

Capacity at the beginning of the third quarter was roughly 20% higher than a year earlier.

In contrast, the amount of electricity generated in coal-fired power plants fell by 6% in the third quarter and constituted 21.4% of nationwide production, down from 23.4% the previous year.

Electricity generation from natural gas plummeted by almost 9%, forming 11.4% of the total share, compared to 12.8% a year earlier.

German electricity imports also rose during the quarter by 2.2% to 23.6 billion kilowatt-hours, while exports grew 19% to 11.8 billion kilowatt-hours.
